K9 KITT
My name is Karen Doss, and I am the Founder of the Fox + Hound K9 Foundation. In collaboration with the National Law Enforcement Hall of Fame, we have the privilege of presenting the inaugural Fox + Hound K9 Foundation award.
It is with the utmost honor and respect that we gather here to bestow this award upon the 2024 K9 Hero Inductee, K9 Kitt of the Braintree Police Department, for his service and sacrifice.
On the fateful day of June 4, 2021,
K9 Kitt and Officer Bill Cushing responded to a domestic violence call, where it was reported that the suspect potentially possessed two firearms. The situation escalated as the suspect, on foot, sought refuge in the woods.
In the face of danger, K9 Kitt fearlessly pursued the scent of the suspect, leading Officer Cushing to the scene where the suspect lay in hiding behind a 4-foot-tall rock. As the suspect emerged with a firearm drawn, Kitt bravely leaped into action. Despite the imminent threat, he lunged at the suspect, who discharged his weapon three times. Tragically, Kitt was struck and flung backward, landing on the ground.
In that moment, a loyal partner made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to shield three officers who had been shot by the suspect.
In that instant, a partner lost their companion and closest ally, a family mourned the loss of one of its own, and a department grieved for the fallen officer. The community lost a steadfast protector.
The selfless and unwavering actions of K9 Kitt serve as a reminder of the extraordinary dedication and valor displayed by our law enforcement professionals, both human and K9.
